Seventeen UNESCO sites, a thousand temples and the quietest mornings in any big city we know.
Kyoto is a city that rewards getting up early. Fushimi Inari's torii gates at seven are a different place from the same path at ten, and the bamboo grove at Arashiyama is only a grove before the tour buses.
We pair a Kyoto ryokan — tatami, a cedar bath, a kaiseki dinner served in your room — with a design hotel in Higashiyama, and plan the days neighbourhood by neighbourhood on foot.
Cherry blossom and autumn maple seasons are extraordinary and extraordinarily busy. We start planning those trips nine months out, and we'll tell you honestly if a shoulder week would serve you better.
(02)When to go
Sakura usually peaks in the first week of April; autumn colour in the last two weeks of November. Summers are hot and humid.
(03)Don't miss
The Yasaka pagoda and the stone lanes of Sannenzaka once the shops close.
The wooden stage above a hillside of maples, spectacular in November.
Yukata, onsen, kaiseki and a futon laid out while you are at dinner.
The bamboo grove at opening, then a slow boat down the Hozugawa.
