(01)The journey

Timed for the maples: temples at opening, a ryokan with its own onsen in Hakone, neighbourhood walks in Kyoto with a guide who grew up in Gion, and the shinkansen between it all.

Timed for the maples: the last two weeks of November, when Kyoto's temple gardens turn red and gold. It's the most beautiful time of year in the city, and the busiest, so this journey is built around early mornings.

Tokyo first, then a night in a Hakone ryokan with its own onsen, then five nights in Kyoto with a guide who grew up in Gion — with Nara and Osaka on either side.
