Glacier valleys, car-free villages and some of the most beautiful railway lines in the world.
Switzerland is best seen from a train window. We plan it around the rail network — the Glacier Express, the Bernina line, the cogwheel up to Jungfraujoch — with a Swiss Travel Pass and luggage sent ahead so you travel with a day bag.
Rather than a new hotel every night, we base you in three places: Lucerne for the lakes, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald for the Jungfrau region, and Zermatt for the Matterhorn.
It is one of our most popular honeymoons and, surprisingly, one of our best family trips: trains are easy with children, and the mountain playgrounds are unbeatable.
(02)When to go
Summer opens the high trails and passes. Winter brings Christmas markets and skiing; some scenic lines run reduced services.
(03)Don't miss
Eight hours from Zermatt to St. Moritz, 291 bridges and a very good lunch.
Seventy-two waterfalls in one valley. Walk to Staubbach before breakfast.
A car-free village and the Matterhorn at the end of almost every street.
The highest railway station in Europe, and the Aletsch glacier below.
