Meghalaya — 'the abode of clouds' — is the trip we recommend to people who think they've seen India. The Khasi and Jaintia hills feel like nowhere else in the country.

The Khasi have been training the roots of rubber fig trees across streams for generations. The most famous, the double-decker bridge at Nongriat, sits at the bottom of about 3,500 steps. It is worth every one.

Between November and April the Umngot river at Dawki runs so clear that boats look like they are hovering. We plan it for a weekday morning and pair it with Mawlynnong and the walk to Shnongpdeng.
