The great Himalayan road trip, by 4×4 or motorcycle with a backup vehicle and mechanic. Through the Atal Tunnel, over Baralacha La, down the Gata Loops and across Tanglang La — and yes, chai at the same dhaba in Sarchu.
The overland route from Manali to Leh is the road trip Indian travellers dream about, and it deserves to be done properly: gradually, with a strong support crew and a vehicle behind you in case anything goes wrong.
Ride a Royal Enfield or travel by 4×4 — or swap between the two. Every departure has a lead rider, a backup vehicle with a mechanic, spare parts, oxygen and a road captain who has crossed these passes more than forty times.

(05)Good to know
- 01You'll need a valid motorcycle licence and real riding experience — this is not the trip to learn on.
- 02The road usually opens in mid-June and closes by the end of September. Snow can close passes at short notice.
- 03Bring waterproof layers: river crossings and afternoon snow on the passes are normal.
